CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM ELECTIONS IN KEY URBAN CENTERS

MINNESOTA, MN
In Honor of George Floyd (5-25-20)

US Senate

*S.M.A.R.T Endorsement

After being elected Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota in 2014, Tina Smith was appointed to replace Al Franken in the US Senate in 2017. She subsequently won a special election for the seat in 2018 and is running for a full term in 2020. Besides her strong progressive positions in the areas of foreign policy, health care, immigration and climate change, Tina worked with Senators Kamala Harris and Cory Booker on legislation to transform policing. Their bill would create a federal use of force standard and a national registry of police misconduct, and it lays out steps our nation needs to take in order to reimagine policing so that we prevent police violence and injustice. This is a seat we need to hold.

Her extensive platform includes an aggressive Criminal Justice Reform plan to "expand innovative programs like Portland Street Response, stop the displacement of marginalized community members, create neighborhood safety hubs to meet our needs in the next disaster, and stop throwing good money after bad in the Portland Police Bureau."  In an interview on KGW, Portland's NBC affiliate, she said, "Criminal activity is illegal, and of course I don't condone it. What I'm focused on is ensuring police do not use violence and even lethal force against people who have done nothing wrong, as we have seen nightly, and for decades. We must not take our focus off why these recent protests began, and reimagine public safety so we can save lives. I condemn arson, obviously. I also condemn the countless deaths of Black individuals at the hands of police."
